Immediately after this, you can hear what is happening inside the elevator and talk to the occupants for as long as you stay on the line. Some first "answer" with a recording and a menu like "Elevator call. At the tone press 1 to talk, press 2 for location, press zero to alert passenger of rescue" like the elevator in Alumni Hall. Sometimes an elevator will ring until an occupant picks up a wired receiver inside of the call box, such is the case with the elevator in the Student Center. The Yellow Emergency boxes are scattered around campus, some inside of buildings and some outside next to sidewalks and parking lots. These generally have 1 button on them, which dials the extension for Campus police (Interestingly, the ones with keypads can be used to make free phone calls by first dialing 9 for an outside line.) When calling these Yellow Emergency boxes, you will hear a brief tone and then be able to hear whatever the box's microphone picks up. You will also be able to speak through the box's speaker, which is quite loud. I'm not exactly sure how this little project started, or even why. I do remember noticing that if you searched the UofW's online telephone directory for a wildcard such as * or %, it returned every record in the database. A quick change to the URL string and I was able to get it to spit out every record in the database on a single page. Showing this to a friend, he captured the results and wrote a python script to dispay a matrix showing which of the ten thousand extensions were assigned being used (or at least, assigned to people in the phone book). This 100x100 matrix visualized large blocks of unassigned extension numbers, which we hoped were reserved for interesting things. Most turned out to be fax machines (and/or modems), but after calling a random sample of them over the span of several weeks, several turned out being really strange. Some extensions would beep and then allow you to hear people talking, or trains going by, etc. One night we went to the campus trying to find the source of some of these weierd noises. We were dialing the extensions from one of the UofW's own phones when we noticed that the phone's LCD display would show a name for the extension being called. So as soon as we dialed a 4-digit extension, the phone would display a name for that destination number. I got out my little notepad of numbers and we started dialing some of the "strange" extensions I had discovered from home. The LCD display showed things like "CAWSC ELEVATOR" and "EMERGENCY LAURIER". We had found the big block of extension numbers reserved for the Elevator emergency phones and the Yellow Emergency Boxes scattered throughout campus. This list is nearly complete, although a few entries are missing. Campus Police's "Campus Emergency Phone Locations" PDF shows maybe 10 entries that we could not find in the block of numbers we found. Some entries have comments in [brackets] and it's also worth noting that some of the Leddy Library entries appear to have been mislabelled between the Main and West building. Thanks to everyone that helped, it was a lot of fun. Anyways, enjoy! - Mike
