The Jim Show

"The Jim Show" was one of the radio shows that I did on CJAM 91.5FM in Windsor Ontario. The show was aired live every Friday night at Midnight, and would usually include me ranting about things, taking callers and playing some of my favourite music. It was usually co-hosted by my friend Jesse, but a few other people also showed up occasionally. One of the bits we did was to do 'sing-alongs', where I would bring an acoustic guitar and play a song for us to sing along to. As with most ideas, they got more complicated and eventually I was completely re-writing existing pop songs and including several other friends to play other instruments.

The Jim Show Sing Alongs

These are all of the "sing-alongs" done on the Jim Show. Most of them were planned out and practiced before, but several of them were just improvised. Thanks to all the friends that helped with each song, they were all pretty varied. The earliest ones were just straight-up covers of old tunes, but most of them are re-wrote melodies and instrumentation for songs that were for some reason popular at the time.

  1. Theme Song 1 (2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Vocals
    • Jesse Chan - Vocals

This was one of the theme songs that sometimes started off "The Jim Show". It was so damn cheesy that it wasn't used a heck of a lot though.

  2. Be My Baby (Sept. 1st 2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals
    • Jesse Chan - Background Vocals

The first "Sing Along" on The Jim Show! A terrible sounding rendition of The Ronettes classic "Be My Baby". Give the DJ's a bit of guts to whip out an acoustic guitar during their own show and make complete fools out of themselves! Pay close attention to Jesse's haunting backgrond vocals.

  3. Then He Kissed Me (Sept. 8th 2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals
    • Jesse Chan - Tambourine
    • Eric Ceresa - Acoustic Guitar

The second "Jim Show Sing Along"! Joined by guest musician Eric Ceresa playing guitar, the trio pumps out a somewhat decent (but definately fun) version of The Crystals tune "Then He Kissed Me".

  4. Baby I Love You (Sept. 15th 2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals
    • Jesse Chan - Tambourine
    • Matt Baker - Percussion (CD's and Tambourine)

The third "Sing-Along" on The Jim Show, and the third Phil Spector song. This being a cover of The Ronettes tune "Baby I Love You". This time extra percussion is being added using a few CD cases and a tambourine. The "Sing-Alongs" were originally meant to make fools out of the DJ's Mike and Jesse live on their own radio show, but this version doesn't sound as silly as it should have. However, the first bit of over-anxious singing definately does a good job at humiliation.

  5. The Real Slim Shady (Sept. 29th 2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals
    • Dave Dupuis - Lead Vocals/Shaker/Vocals
    • Jesse Chan - Slide Whistle/Air Siren
    • Eric Ceresa - Maracca/Tambourine/Vocals

The fourth "Sing-Along" on The Jim Show. Now instead of trying to play really nice Phil Spector songs, they decided to write their own songs using lyrics from bad popular songs. Humour at it's finest! Mike wrote a whole new chord progression that fit Eminem's "The Real Slim Shady" perfectly, including a chorus that is taken from the melody of "Do Your Ears Hang Low?". Dave then wrote a really nice melody for the song, so they decided to do it live on the radio! Four people in the studio playing multiple instruments makes for a fairly complex sounding little tune, unfortunately the sound quality isn't the greatest.

  6. Nookie (Oct. 13th 2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Lead Vocals
    • Dave Dupuis - Maraccas/Shaker/Background Vocals
    • Pat Power - Snare Drum/Ride Cymbal/Wind Chimes/Tambourine

Nothing better than combining a Limp Bizkit song with the classic 3/4 waltz tempo. This is from the fifth "Sing Along" on The Jim Show, and it follows the formula of the previous song "The Real Slim Shady". Take lyrics of a bad popular song, and write a nice chord progression and melody for it. The instrumentation inspired by The Beach Boy's "Surfer Girl", only not as good. Quite amusing to listen to the immature lyrics being sung clearly enough to understand them.

  7. Advertisement 1 (December 10th 2000)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitars/Lead Vocals
    • Dave Dupuis - Wobble Board/Background Vocals

An actual advertisement cart recorded as a promo for "The Jim Show". Recorded by Mike in the basement on a 4-track cassette recorder. This is to the tune of "Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport" by Rolf Harris.

  8. Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport (January 13th 2001)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitars/Background Vocals
    • Dave Dupuis - Wobble Board/Lead Vocals

A Rolf Harris classic, "Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport" played live on The Jim Show. This tape was was missing until 2007.

  9. The Humpty Dance (January 13th 2001)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Background Vocals
    • Dave Dupuis - Lead Vocals

"The Humpty Dance" by the Digital Underground gets completely re-written by Mike and Dave for an impromptu performance on The Jim Show. This would make it the fifth "Sing Along" to happen live on Mike's radio show. Instrumentation is minimal, but Dave's melody is definately catchy! Acoustic guitar and singin' about "Doin' the Humpty Dance" definately makes a winning combination! Humpty would be proud as Dave sends "Shout Outs" to the whole world during the outro, and wishes the ladies "Peace and Humptiness Forever".

  10. Aarons Party (Come Get It) (January 13th 2001)
    • Mike Beauchamp - Acoustic Guitar/Background Vocals
    • Dave Dupuis - Accordian/Lead Vocals
    • Hayley Walker - Tambourine/Background Vocals

The last "Sing Along" on The Jim Show features some of the worst lyrics written in the past few years. The lyrics are from "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)", reinvented by Dave as a nice melody overtop of Mike's mellow chord progression. Dave also adds a sad mood to the song with his accordian. The song ends with a nice few verses of "Na-Na"'s, accurate to Aaron Carter's original version, only done in a "Hey Jude" type style instead of the original crappy style. As with all the Sing-Alongs, it is even funnier if you've heard the original song already.
